Jorge, a Homes of the Rich reader from Argentina, sent me floor plans of a 90,000 square foot “Super Mansion” he designed. He isn’t a professional architect, but he sure has talent. Way to go Jorge! They look great. I definitely never seen a home shaped like that before! What is your opinion on his designs?

Michael again. What do you think about this one?

Supposed to be a very modern house. The floor plan takes some inspiration from a house in NY, which was posted here some time ago. That house is more classical. I just took the plan and changed it.

2-story (I was thinking 3, but not sure) grand foyer with two stairs, behind these are two closets. To the left a large room and a library. To the right a dining room, bar and a smaller sitting room. You also have a 2-story room, a second room and a large multi-purpose room, can be gallery, ballroom and used for much more. Large kitchen with breakfast corner and a smaller family room. A hall with coat room and half bath, and from here you can access the long gallery to the second building (not yet planned) with garages and guest rooms with baths.

Second stairs takes you to all levels, and there is an elevator also.

In a modern house, I like the idea with little doors between the rooms. What do you think about this?

Hello again from Michael.

Have a boring day. Thought I should do some more basic floor plans and post them.

The house on the photos is called Villa Täcka Udden, and you find it on the island Djurgården in Stockholm. This is a posh area, with many embassies and ambassadorial residences.

This house is very popular to look at. A  castle-like villa with water views. It sits on a large piece of land, not sure how large.  Just sad that across the water is an area not so posh, with depressing-looking buildings. So the view is somewhat ruined. But let’s forget about that now. We will look at the plans for the gound floor. They are still very basic.

I have real renderings and floor plans for this house, but here is my version: From the entrance:  Looking at the plan, you see to the right a large winter garden. To the left you find a first coat room with closets on the left and 3 half baths (in Swedish you just call ‘em toilets) to the right. After this you come into the first stair hall, and here you have the grand staircase which takes you to every floor in the house, basement included. A bit below is more space for coats, and 3 more half baths. And after this the second stair hall, which also takes you to all levels of the house. And a good-sized elevator to every level you also find here.

The rooms on this level are large and very luxurious. A large salon opens up to the dining room, and after this you have two more rooms and a large library and a second room, perhaps a salon. Both the library and this room have access to the smaller terrace, thinking that perhaps there should be a larger terrace to the library, not sure still.

As you can see, there is no kitchen on this level. This is because the ground floor is for representation purposes, so there is no need of a kitchen here. You find the kitchen in the basement, or the lower level if you preffer. It has its own door to the outside, and you reach it also via the elevator and staircases. The kitchen is very large, for professional usage, with cooling and freezing rooms.

The first floor has several terraces and a balcony in the tower-part. A very grand master suite with a 2-level WIC. Here you also find an amazing nursery with a smaller bathroom and very exclusive closets for your fine collection of sleepsuits.

As I have designed it, the cost of construction will be “somewhat high”, meaning VERY expensive, well over €25 million. Now I need a wealthy wife to complete it!

I will probably change the facade colour. But a pink facade with copper roof is not a bad combo! But I think an all-white facade with copper or slate roof is better.

Michael again. This time I wanted to do a basic plan that takes inspiration from Clarendon Court in Newport, RI.

This one I am thinking about turning into a real floor plan. Adding all the details needed. The hall has two closets and a bit forward there is the grand staircase and a door to the loggia behind it. A large dining room and a large salon are the two most important rooms. Two large terraces. Bar and library. A second staircse, “semi-grand”, which takes you to the upper floor and the basement. Men’s room and ladie’s room, and the kitchen with a family room.

The master suite has a sitting room, the large bedroom, a WIC and a good-sized bath. The upper floor, still in planning, offers a large hall, a sitting room, terraces towards the water, and several bedrooms, each with ensuites.

Thinking about improving my skills in floor planning. This is not an easy thing to do.  But it is great fun to plan and try to fígure out how to just make it right.
