Wonderfully regal front elevation – but then I’m a sucker for tiered ballustrades, pediments, columns and fountains. Inside, another story. The 2 story foyer is more useful than impressive, the living room is dark and squat, its fireplace is miserable. Is it just the photography or does the whole mansion seem rather dark? The 2 story great room is just a widening in the hallway, so narrow it should be called the great alcove. However, the cabinetry throughout is stunning – from the great room’s carved fireplace and fluted rectangular columns supporting the beautiful bridge to the 2 story home office, it is gorgeous. The backyard BBQ area should be a covered loggia instead of exposed to the elements, after all, sooner or later, one day, it will rain again in California. And that’ll be the day you planned a BBQ dinner for twenty of your closest friends, and had to cancel it. A truly great house must be designed to anticipate and accommodate all regular, predictible conditions; inclement weather should never be an issue.
