$64 Million 34,000 Square Foot Mega Mansion In Toorak, AU Completed!

[divide]

Back in 2013 we posted about a mega mansion being built in the wealthy Toorak suburb of Victoria, Australia. Well, it is finally completed! The approximately 34,000 square foot home is located on St. George’s Road and was modeled after the Gilded Age mansion, Marble House, built by the Vanderbilt family in the 1890’s in Newport, RI. It is owned by businessman/property developer Harry Stamoulis. Harry purchased the land for $24 million and then spent another $40 million building the home. Features include 5 bedrooms, 9 bathrooms, 2 kitchens, ballroom, swimming pool and a tennis court.

Wow, I’m amazed he could find such a large chunk of land in Toorak, even back in 2010! Block of flats looking directly into my backyard would be a bit of a turn-off for me though.

Well, it does resemble Marble House, minus the whole being clad completely in marble part. As for the location, it’s horrid. I don’t care how exclusive the neighborhood is – it offers no view, and is 15-feet away from townhomes. This makes living in a New York Penthouse or townhouse look like a steal.

At that price, and at that size, no neighborhood, however exclusive, qualifies. A palace on that scale should be its own neighborhood, far from other lesser dwellings. This place will cost its first owner a bundle when it sells, if it ever does. Twenty-four million for that lot – bordering an apartment building on one side and relatively tiny homes on the other, and the mansion sitting a lousy hundred feet or so from the street – it’s insane.
