Built as a private residence in 1887, the home was extensively remodeled by Brooklyn-based architect Frank Freeman in 1919. It later became a convent and spirituality center, before recently becoming a private residence once again. The home is considered a Long Island Landmark. It was bought by Nine West shoe manufacturer founder Vincent Camuto and his wife Louise for $35 million in October of 2005. They had Andre Tchelistcheff Architects remodel the home. It features approximately 22,000 square feet of living space with 11 bedrooms, 12 full and 4 half bathrooms, 3-story foyer with grand curved staircase, limestone floors, huge formal rooms and more. The grounds feature a carriage house, gatehouse, vast lawns, swimming pool, formal gardens, fountain and a motor court.

It is listed at $85,000,000.

It’s a great house, although it is far too close to the highway which gets redonkulously busy in the summer. I can’t imagine that it’s worth almost twice as much as it was two years ago.

Ditto to Grrrowler’s comment. Lovely but the highway locale is less than desirable. For $85 million, *everything* should be desirable.

It’s probably a bit larger than the surrounding mansions, and it drips with old money class and style and the wonderful craftsmanship exhibited throughout might very well be irreplaceable today in NY. The price comes from the huge expense of regular remodeling, with each owner attempting to recoup the cost of his vanities and eccentricities. Well, sorry ’bout that. The owner should consider himself lucky if he gets even half the asking price.
