Fashion mogul Marc Ecko has listed his NJ estate, dubbed “Stronghold” for $18 million. Located at 450 Claremont Road in Bernardsville, NJ the castle-like home was built by Prudential Insurance founder and US Sen. John Dryden in 1899. In 1940 it was turned into an all-girls school named Gill St. Bernard’s School. Marc bought the home for $7.4 million back in 2005 and spent $21.8 million on renovations.

It features approximately 30,000 square feet of living space with 7 bedrooms, 8 full and 3 half bathrooms, foyer with staircase, formal living & dining rooms, gourmet kitchen, breakfast room, family room, home office, conservatory and more. There is also a separate building with indoor basketball court.

Outdoor features include patios and a swimming pool.

It is listed at $18,000,000.

It may not be pretty per se, but it certainly is unique. Reminds me of a train station a bit. Interior is certainly eclectic but kudos for the unique design schemes. A cool place.

Breathtaking exterior elevation. The interior – well, that’s breathtaking too. No doubt that indoor basketball court is a leftover from the estate’s girl’s school daze – hopefully the next owner will not leave that great space wasted and have some fun with it.

He’s taking quite a loss on the investment. I agree with Daniel: a train station comes to mind.

I live just a few miles from this property (in the poor section of town LOL) I was in ruins before Mr. Ecko took over. It’s too massive with 0 coziness. It was better as a school
