I love this concept -single floor mansions rock. There are so many advantages. No need for staircases and elevators, and no need for ground floor rooms to be squashed under the floors of second story rooms. Every room, including bedrooms, can be given access to ground level outdoor facilities. And because single story mansions necessarily have a larger footprint, it’s hard for some cheap bastard gazillionaire to shoehorn his McMansion into a tight lot. He has to provide property appropriate to the project.

While most of the ceilings in this house are of decent height, the architect should have just specified a 20-24 foot ceiling over the entire building. No other single specification can make such a big difference. Double-height ceilings double the volume of enclosed space, make every room monumental, and can make any house seem twice its actual size.

Don’t worry about utility costs – if you have to ask, you shouldn’t be building a mansion at all.
