Stately Newly Built Italianate Villa In China By Richard Manion Architecture

This newly built Italianate villa is located in the Rose Garden Villas gated community in Shanghai, China. It was designed by renowned Richard Manion Architecture. It is a modern-day interpretation of the great Mediterranean Revival houses of Addison Mizner, Maurice Fatio and Marion Sims Wyeth in Palm Beach.

From the project page –

The front façade, with projecting wings, has a three-arched entrance veranda as its graceful centerpiece. Golden limestone adorns the elegant façades, which feature carved stone balustrades, accent scrolls, Italianate chimneys and a terra cotta tile roof.

The rear garden façade, with its dramatic U-shaped plan and projecting central bay, provides five loggias for extensive outdoor living verandas from major formal and family rooms.

The sophisticated interiors are modeled after the grand interiors of Palm Beach villas, including arcaded galleries with vaulted ceilings and marble floors, and a two-story entrance hall and living room with classical columns, detailed coffered ceilings and inlaid wood floors.

Ok, so this is *heavily* inspired by one of Jeff Smith’s designs. Check out that rear…practically identical. (House #2)

With that said, it’s a gorgeous exterior. Really love the details throughout. The interior is hit (foyer, office) and miss (2-story living room, dining room, bath). You can tell the interior quality is not the very best. Not bad, but not the best.

He has a bunch of new projects on his website.

Although the Château de la Lumière in Singapore is an old one, I cannot wait to see the pictures.

I’ve tried to find the construction site around Nassim Road, but I didn’t manage to find it.

By the way, Kenny, do you know where is the construction site of his Contemporary Colonial in Pacific Palisades?

I love the houses Manion’s firm designed for the Rose Garden Villas in Shanghai. I hope that the firm puts out a second monograph and these are featured. The exteriors are fantastic, but you are right Daniel- the interiors don’t quite match up. Not bad, but not too the level they should be at. I have searched high and low for information on these homes, but can’t find zilch.

The exterior needs some spice and jazz, and the interior is just simply conventional mansion, with some added color and lights.
