UK mobile phone magnate John Caudwell plans to turn his two London homes into one mega mansion. John founded Phones4u, which he sold for $2.5 billion in 2006. He is believed to be Britain’s highest income tax payer. He owns a 22,000 square foot mansion and a townhouse that are adjacent to each other. John plans to link the two homes together via a 14,000 square foot subterranean extension. The new extension will feature a game room, indoor swimming pool, sauna, kitchen, salon, media room, plant room and a car park. There will be a combined nearly 50,000 square feet of living space with 12 bedrooms (there are five in each house already and the plans include two more in the underground extension). Mr. Caudwell bought the two properties last year for £81 million or $130 million. Prices for other homes in the area are around $5,000/square foot, which means once completed the mega mansion could be worth £250 million or $401 million!!

If I recall, this is the “compound” with the very desirable motor court between the two houses. If someone wants a gigantic mansion in the middle of Mayfair, I’d much rather he do this than to either A) tear down both houses and build something hideous, or B) add-on to each house above grade.

I love how the article refers to the two houses being “knocked together”. That’s quite an understatement. I do wonder if the council will approve the plans.

London has extraordinarily strict preservation laws and I’m nearly certain that he would not be legally able to do either plan A or B, period. This is the reason why these massive “subterranean” expansions are so popular over there. So don’t be so sure he wouldn’t absolutely love to either build some new hideous monstrosity either by leveling them or combining them. If their preservation laws were not so strict, I’d imagine there would be plague of tacky new mansions covering London like warts, in an attempt to satisfy the exhorbatant luxuries required by sheiks and Russian gangsters.

I’d like to give the guy the benefit of a doubt, but I know you’re right.

Laughable yet shameful at the same time. For the price I could probably knock on Lakshmi Mittal’s door and get his place, plus still have a couple hundred million left over.
