I think I’m going to give up on trying to find an Australian home that I actually like.

That’s because you’re looking in the wrong place. There are plenty of nice homes here, they just aren’t often mansions (taxes and labour are too laughably high here to warrant many existing compared to, say, the U.S)

Go to realestate.com.au and check out places like Toorak, Camberwell, Balwyn North, Hawthorn, South Yarra, Brighton, Portsea and Mt Eliza (yes, I realise they’re all in Victoria but this is the state in which I am most familiar).

I should probably add Portsea to that list too.

I could see an extended stay if a friend owned it, but not 24/7/365

For me, it hits a homerun as a beach house. It’s light, bright and open. Although, looking at picture 10 concerns me. It is the nicest home on the beach, compared to it’s neighbors. Not sure why that concerns me, other than financially.

I wouldn’t be buying it. The beaches here have been slowly eroding the land for the last couple of years. Won’t be long till that tree out front ends up in the ocean.
