Here are two (first two) updated aerial pics of Chateau des Fleurs, the massive 60,000 square foot mega mansion located at the intersection of Bellagio Road and Stone Canyon Road in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles, CA. It was designed by architect William Hefner and is being built by Finton Construction. Construction began in September of 2008 and is nearing completion. Now we just have to wait to see what the interior looks like!!

  • Daniel

I’m very curious to see what the interior of this will look like. Will they go over the top opulent or throw in more transitional elements? Unnecessarily huge and I love it for that reason.

Lol……and that’s EXACTLY why I despise with a burning passion any “house” this revoltingly gargantuan in size.

Does anyone know who the owner is?

Apparently, some lawyer named Jeffrey A. Kaplan.

Normally these large homes in beverly hills have more architectual elements… this one just looks like a hotel.

That is monstrous. It seems like it would be cheaper and more effective for the owner to simply install a large neon sign on the property that reads “LOOK AT ME!!!”

The design and build team will probably ensure that it will be a top quality build, but unlike Daniel I don’t hold out much hope that the interior won’t be completely over the top. I hope I’m wrong.

Just in time for Tamara Ecclestone to buy it and one-up her sister.

There was a rumour (yeah, another one) that she bought that thing across the road from Fleur de Lys.

Its on Stone Canyon Road overlooking the Bel Air golf course. Fleur de Lys is several hills east of this home.

Looks like many of the third floor windows along the mansard roof are fake.

What kind of ego needs a place this large? An ego the size of the house, I guess.

60,000 square feet? Pssh, what is this, Shacks of the rich? This thing is tiny and pathetic. Tear it down and try again. I said I wanted a medium sized house; you know something in the six figure range for square feet…

What? Whaddya mean my ego wouldn’t fit in the world?

My first thought was “Beverly Hillbillies.” It’s funny if you look at the similiarities on the facade. What is striking is the difference in the size. If you look at the original Beverly Hillbillies house it was big but not huge. I think in the whole show there were only about 10 rooms ever shown, plus the concrete pond. I bet it would be pretty easy to get lost in this place. Would you call this “chateau” or “Beaux arts” style?

This is probably a very bad and historically incorrect attempt at French architecture of the 19th century, for example.

A very nice, classical estate. I do wish it was on a bigger lot and the front of the house faced the street after arriving down a long, long driveway. Probably not many options for that in Bel Air, but a better street appeal could be achieved by using the same model with a 30,000 square foot pad.

They built it in this orientation for a reason. THE VIEW! It’s just like Tom Brady’s house… the setup seems odd, but its to place the backa nd pool overlooking the view.

If the links are copyrighted and you haven’t credited the photographer, you could be in trouble, Kenny. You must credit. Anyway, the images are old, the landscaping is now almost done, but not in these pics.

He had Finton do a Q&A on here a few weeks ago so my guess if Finton himself provided these photographs.

Probably. I wish Finton talked more about the house. I don’t even think it’s in his book.

I was just watching at the aerial photography pricing in LA area and the cheapest price per property I could find was a $175 special, limited time offer.

like Brian and Jason pop up again and say a thing or two about the design.

A grossly bloated, poorly designed and tasteless vulgar heap of construction materials masquerading as a classical mansion. So disgraceful.

And the comments regarding the original Beverly Hillbillies home are so spot on. That home is elegant and designed to perfection. This catering hall/Disney theme park pavillion is just disgusting and the fake third floor windows and shallow mansard roof are just 2 of the hideous, incorrectly scaled design elements that place this in the “WTF were they thinking” category.

Actually, even the Beverly Hillbillies is historically inaccurate, but yes, much more digestible pile of fake Frenchness.

mac22, what other historically inaccurate details would you point out? While you were appalled at the roof and hideous windows, I laughed out loud at that turret near the pool! Like, what does that have anything to do with the rest of the house?

I was appalled that this fake château was built of wood! Wood?! Why wood? Why not something much more durable like bricks or something?

All modern houses are framed in wood nowadays. Just one of the reasons houses today are nowhere near the quality of houses built 100 years ago.

Also just FYI, all interior shots of the Beverly Hillbillies mansion on the show were done on sets and not in the actual house, which looks very different from the interiors on the show.

Oh, I know. I was talking about the exterior, it looks French, but it isn’t.

It’s also a bit startling that that wood isn’t cheap.

The interior is very conservative. They have many murals depicting landscapes, like you’d find in a traditional chateau. The taste leaves much to be desired, however. These people are social climbers who are trying to fit in more than they’re expressing their desires and tastes.

When it gets to be this large it is difficult to stay charming without going gaudy; it’s just going to happen. I hope LAFD required them to build this monstrosity with sprinklers.

What’s amazing about this, is that the man who owns it- Jeffery A. Kaplan, literally got his money by gouging rent from poor families in mobile home parks. They have heinous reputations as slumlords who fight rent control laws so they can literally then turn around and rip their tenants off. Think I’m being hyperbolic? Google Tatum-Kaplan Financial.
Think about all of the people whose lives were damaged (and are being damaged) so that his wife could have her own wing of Chateau de Fleurs. I don’t care what your politics are, this is egregious and insulting to all of the thousands of lives he’s ruined on his way to the top!

Just for giggles…Jeffery Kaplan is about 5′ tall. NO KIDDING! Can’t you see him getting lost in this house. He probably would start crying and call out for the Mommy he never had. Kinda sad if you think about it.
