Here are some updated Google Street View images of the massive 38,000 square foot mega mansion being built at the intersection of River and Norton Roads in Potomac, MD. It has been under construction for close to two years now. As you can see, it boasts two 5-car garages on either end and it is rumored that there is also going to be a 5,000 square foot guest house on the property as well. Once completed, it will be the largest home in Montgomery County. It has made a lot of progress since we last blogged about in January of last year. I love the symmetry of the exterior and I bet the interior is going to be absolutely divine!

What is it with all these Potomac mansion updates recently?
Actually quite like this house, reminds me of some of the mansions in Bridle Path. It doesn’t sit nicely with its surroundings though and its positioning in relation to the road is slightly odd.

The exterior isn’t bad. But, it’s odd that it’s set so far back from River Road, like it’s going to have some privacy, but then is seemingly right next to Norton Road (even though the garage wall is almost 90′ from the perimeter fence). It’s not how I would have sited it on the lot.

On Bing you can look “inside” the house: http://binged.it/12Yj9Bb

I like how you can see the makings of the double staircase in Bing Maps 🙂

I’m sure there will be extensive landscaping to lessen the impact of being so close to Norton Rd. Judging by the size and shape of the lot, and the shape of the home and its various wings, I’m not sure they had a whole lot of wiggle room.

I do not know what the end result of this mansion will look like; however, at this present moment, it looks most like it would be fit for a cemetery and tombs. I do not like the building and I do not like the site. Also, it looks partly like a funeral home to transport people who have left this world. It may be a good residence for a funeral director, who wants to keep home and business together.

There is a mausoleum in my town that looks just like this place.

The exterior is better than average for the DC suburbs – but I somewhat agree about the sepulchral quality. What I find more objectionable is that large porte-cochere. It seems a bit too big and out of scale – but then, they often do. But making it in a contrasting stone color worsens the problem by drawing attention to it!

I don’t mind it. Landscaping will make or break this.
