This estate was originally built for Nelson Doubleday, as in the Doubleday Publishing family. Mill Neck is the location of many of the grandest of the “Gold Coast” estates built for American industrialists between 1910-1929 — and, fortunately, many of them still survive with original acreage intact. Here’s a link to a cool, long-ago brochure profiling the estate when it was earlier offered for sale:

The interior is in desperate need of updating, but I love the house. The house, grounds, and setting all look beautiful

As for the interior, it looks like a lot of the period details are still there, so there are great possibilities.

X2 to what Grrrowler said. I can just picture a wealthy couple pulling up to this in their Duesenberg.

Make that X3 to what Grrrowler said. This is drop dead beautiful, and I can’t think of another home at the moment that would be more breathtaking to drive up the driveway and pull up in front of. With some sensitive updating inside this will be unbeatable.
