The massive mega mansion located at 9577 Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills, CA may have finally sold. Known as Palais des Anges, the palatial 36,000 square foot home was last on the market for $55,000,000.

From Curbed:

We heard a rumor that 9577 Sunset, the out of control, gold-doorknobbed mega-mansion built by real estate investor C. Frederick Wehba, was in escrow. The 36,000 square foot house first hit the market in June 2010, before it was even completely finished, asking $68.5 million. Mauricio Umansky, the real estate agent for the house, tells us they’re working on a deal, but it’s not still not finished and there’s no escrow yet.

I dont know whether or not I like the exterior of this house, their definetly taking advantage of the location as the plot size is relatively small, had this house been built in bridle path, it would have been dubbed obstentaticious or tacky. The interior on this is stunning though, I must admit, and I’m sure the owner will be very happy here. I would have paid about $25 million for this personally…

The interior is nice for a museum, but it’s not a comfortable interior.

I have never seen a museum with an interior like this. In my opinion comparisons to stately homes that have been converted into museums cannot be deemed your usual museum, they are really only museums of the household and it’s possessions in the first place and not a ‘museum,’ just a family home which you may tour. I personally, would ONLY use museum to describe interiors filled with antique furniture and decor (not original to the building) that you would always be worried about damaging, I would not use it to describe just bare walls, floors and reproduction furniture.

Sam has a point about what everyone would think if this were in Toronto, or elsewhere, and I agree. This house would fit somewhere in France, or even in the U.S. midwest with a huge amount of land around it. But, in a city it just looks silly. Plus, it’s completely over the top for my liking. It looks more gaudy than stylish, although as Daniel said, some contemporary furnishings would certainly help.

I’m kind of disappointed that they felt the need to “embellish” the facade instead of just directly duplicating Marble House, since I think the original is definitely way more tasteful. But then again, this IS Beverly Hills…

I love the architecture and quality of this home, but I couldn’t imagine living in it. Maybe a similarly-designed home with some interior modifications though (I’d want some wood-paneled walls and rooms that were where I could imagine coming home and plopping down on a sofa. I’d equip it with a HUGE library. It looks to me like it’s done in the Beaux-Arts style, which is very formal and stately-looking.
