This has been bugging for quite some time, but why are the majority of homes in Arizona (or in other parts of the desert) single-story? A lot of the homes are these gigantic 20,000 sq ft mansions, a lot of which don’t have a second floor. It just seems like a hassle walking through all that on a single level, with everything so spread out.

I like #1. Even it is single storey. They probably like them in AZ because they are cooler when lower to the ground? If the lots are large its probably cheaper too.
